![]() ![]() The majority of the film’s events are told in flashback as he reminisces about his past. The story’s framing device is the return of a Taku from a high school reunion in Kochi, using an older Taku as a frame. Studio Ghibli’s closest attempt to make a B-Tier film was released in 1993, as the Japanese company released its deepest film. Ultimately, Lee argues that Ocean Waves is a film that deserves to be celebrated for its queer sensibility. The film’s use of color and light also contribute to its queer aesthetic. Lee argues that the film’s focus on friendship and love between two young men challenges normative ideas about masculine and feminine roles. It feels sad, bittersweet and nostalgic-a good way to describe the film overall. In “Is Ocean Waves a Queer Film?,” Christopher Lee examines the ways in which the film subverts traditional ideas about gender and sexuality. It's always portrayed as romantic ending up with a childhood friend/school sweetheart based on your shared history but at the end of the day, the person you're ending up with is not the person you're fondly remembering. It's a refreshing take how I used to go for this type of romance when I was younger but looking at it now, it seems shallow and toxic when forced. I don't see much value for the guy wanting to be together with a girl who obviously didn't change much. He got roped in and got dragged into her affairs during HS but they're adults now. But good thing the movie ended openly and more vague than that bec obviously I think the main guy could do better. I get why the main guy would feel sentimentality esp when he finally acknowledged his feelings for her and got the closure he needed from his dear friend. Like it didn't occur to her he might just come back which the main guy obviously did. ![]() Like why would she visit the main guy in Tokyo when she's obviously just been invited to a class reunion. But still, her impulsiveness and not thinking straight about anything is still there and just made me facepalm heavily □♀️. I would understand why she would feel sentimentality towards the main guy when the reunion was brought up. She did show potential for maturity when the main guy called her out in the hotel room about her coffee shop bs. Despite her being a biatch it's not like she's not redeemable. However, I agree that the main girl didn't change much at the end of the movie which is meh I guess. It's a realistic take how egoistic teenagers are and how small their world can be.
